Registrations open for NetHui 2013!

InternetNZ (Internet New Zealand Inc) is pleased to announce that registrations for NetHui 2013 – New Zealand’s largest and most-inclusive Internet-related conference – are now open.

Registrations cost a low $40 including GST. A registration form is available online at www.nethui.org.nz.

This year, NetHui is being held for the first time in Wellington. Up to 500 people will come together from 8 – 10 July, packing the Town Hall to hear about and participate in wide-ranging discussions concerning key Internet issues such as Internet openness, access, diversity, Internet policy and more.

The programme for NetHui 2013 is being formulated with ongoing community involvement. There will be a stack of great discussion and education sessions, keynote addresses and a number of community events occurring with the conference.

Confirmed parts of the programme include Sessions on Day One covering Internet Research and Youth and the Internet. A Maori meet-up will also feature, as will a workshop on Wellington City’s digital strategy, and a technical gathering dubbed InTAC. In addition, Day One will feature a number of ‘Jump start’ sessions, in which conference-goers who want to develop a deeper understanding of the issues can quickly bring themselves up-to-speed.

Days Two and Three will see attendees treated to a range of Panels and Sessions. Led by community facilitators, these sessions will focus on topical Internet issues such as Access, Culture, Economy & Business, Education, Internet and the Law, Governance, Health, Safety and Security, Rural and more.

MC’ed by comedian Michèle A’Court, NetHui 2013 will feature a soon-to-be-announced international keynote speaker with expertise in ‘hacker culture’. Several national speakers will also grace the stage.

A Parliamentary Internet Forum (PIF) Panel has been confirmed for NetHui 2013. A new initiative organised by members from the country’s main political parties, the PIF is a seminar series designed by MPs, for MPs, where they can learn more about the Internet and how it works. During the panel, NetHui 2013 attendees will hear from the MPs who have rolled up their sleeves to work across party lines to make the Forum happen.

For those keen to carry on after hours, a number of evening events are being arranged for NetHui 2013 including meet-ups organised by Creative Commons NZ and other community organisations. There will be a movie night, with the critically acclaimed 2012 documentary ‘We are Legion’ being screened. InternetNZ members will be able to attend the society’s AGM, and Geek Girl Dinner’s will be holding an evening event.

Community organisations interested in organising a NetHui 2013 meet up are welcome to do so and are asked to contact office@internetnz.net.nz in the first instance to make arrangements.

InternetNZ Acting Chief Executive Jordan Carter says InternetNZ is organising NetHui 2013 as a platform for all those involved with the Internet in New Zealand to involve their communities.

“This is your opportunity to engage in the myriad of issues surrounding the impact of the Internet on today’s society. Bringing together a vast range of perspectives on hot point Internet issues, NetHui 2013 will be too important to miss,” he says.
